Planning a Safe Running Route in the Fall

10.07.24

As we head into fall, it’s important to be intentional and plan a safe running route before you step out the door. To safely navigate your fall runs, follow these four easy-to-remember tips, presented to you by Wesco.

Tip 1: Choose well-foot trafficked and well-lit areas

Pittsburgh and surrounding communities have a plethora of safe trails and parks for fall running. Choose a route that you know well and has ample lighting. Some local favorites include:

  • Great Allegheny Passage
  • North Shore Trail
  • Westmoreland Heritage Trail
  • North Park
  • Boyce Park

Tip 2: Watch out for obstacles along the route

Be aware of construction, road closures, or fallen branches in case a detour is needed.Fallen leaves can also be a safety hazard if they cover the entire trail. They may cover dips or holes in the road that you’re unaware of, so make sure you’re staying cautious when you’re in an unfamiliar area. Having a flashlight or headlamp can also be useful for illuminating trails as it gets darker.

Tip 3: Set up an emergency plan

Before you head out the door, make sure you have an established emergency plan. Whether it be notifying a friend, partner, or parent, make sure you tell someone your planned running route. If you sport an activity watch such as a Garmin or Apple Watch, setup emergency contacts within the appropriate apps. Knowing how to use all of your watch features is important in the event of an emergency so you can notify your contacts. It’s also good practice to test out the other safety features to familiarize yourself if a situation arises. And, don’t forget to make sure your devices are charged before you head out!

Tip 4: Stay mindful on your run

Be mindful of your surroundings and prevent any distractions that might inhibit any of your senses. This is especially important when running along roadsides or on sidewalks. If you do run along roadsides, consider wearing reflective running gear so passing vehicles can see you. Avoid excessively looking at your phone so your eyes are on the road ahead.
