Stay Injury-Free This Fall and Winter: Tips for Runners
As the leaves start to turn and the temperatures drop, many runners find themselves hitting the pavement more than ever. But be careful! Running injuries can be more common during the fall and winter months. Why is that? Changing weather and ground conditions may increase your chances of a fall, sprain, or tear. The good news is that with a few simple tips from Wesco, you can stay safe and enjoy your runs all season long!
Tip 1: Gear up right
First things first—let’s talk gear! As the weather cools down, layering up is your best friend. Think long sleeves and breathable fabrics to keep you warm without overheating. Don’t forget accessories like beanies, a balaclava, gloves, and cozy wool socks to protect your exposed skin from the chill.
As for shoes, make sure you’re rocking a pair that offers good traction. If you haven’t upgraded in a while, now might be the time to look for running shoes with deeper grooves on the sole for extra grip. We recommend checking out Brooks Running for some great shoes, apparel, and accessories. If you live in a snowy or icy area, consider adding traction cleats for extra safety.
Tip 2: Warm up and cool down
When it’s chilly out, your muscles might feel a bit tighter, which can affect your run. For this reason, it’s super important to warm up! A quick 5-10 minute dynamic warm-up can get your body ready to roll. We love dynamic stretches like walking lunges and leg swings. Don’t forget to stretch side to side with side lunges or side steps to keep every muscle group happy.
After your run, take some time to cool down with static stretches. Favorites include the standing figure 4 stretch and the standing quad stretch. Your joints will thank you!
Tip 3: Pace yourself
Weather can be unpredictable, with rain, ice, and snow changing the way you run. Take it easy and find your rhythm when conditions shift. Pacing yourself helps you get comfortable with your footing and builds your confidence on those trickier days
Tip 4: Have a backup plan
Sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate, and that’s okay! If the weather isn’t ideal, hop on the treadmill for a workout. You can control the pace and incline, making it a great alternative. Also, don’t forget to mix it up with cross-training and strength workouts to keep your muscles strong and balanced. There are a ton of great indoor workout classes and activities that let you accomplish this as well. Variety is key to staying healthy and happy all year long! 💪
